Ford RideLondon takes place between Friday 24 May and Sunday 26 May. Please read the what’s happening in your area section for detailed information.

 

As an overview:

 

Temporary road closures will be in place in the Essex districts of Uttlesford, Braintree, Colchester, Tendring, and Maldon on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May.

 

There will be a similar impact in the South Cambridgeshire, North Hertfordshire, and East Hertfordshire districts on Friday 24 May.

There will be extensive road closures across central London, east London, and Essex on Sunday 26 May.

 

The M11, M25, A12, A120, A130, and A131 are open as usual, but there will be a part-closure of three cross-country roads:

 

  • A414 - between junction seven of the M11 to the A414 London Road in Chelmsford from 05:00 to 17:00.
  • A1060 - closed in both directions at Leaden Roding and between Writtle and Chelmsford from 07:00. It will reopen at Leaden Roding only, in a westbound direction, at 13:30 for access towards Hatfield Heath and the M11. It will fully reopen at 15:30.
  • Essex Regiment Way B1008 - closed between the A131 and Ford End from 07:30 to 14:45.

    The Ford RideLondon-Essex 100

  • Stewards and volunteers will provide assistance during the event and help you cross the route wherever possible. If you require assistance that is not a 999 emergency during the event, please ask event staff. There will be about 30 vehicle crossing points available on the Ford RideLondon-Essex route, allowing drivers to cross the route safely. Pedestrian crossing points are also located along the event route. These will be supervised to help pedestrians cross the road. Usual crossings may be suspended, but an alternative will be available where it will be easier to cross.
  • If you require the emergency services, call 999. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained and prioritised throughout the Ford RideLondon-Essex event.

    Vehicle crossing points for resident access

    The junction of Whitehall Road and the Glade (outside Bancroft’s School) open between 05.00 and 06.30.

    At two points across Palmerston Road at Kings Avenue/Roebuck Lane and Albert Road, accessible all day.

    Road closures

    From South Woodford (via the Woodford Green roundabout), the High Road Woodford Green (A1199) to the junction of High Road and Epping New Road, (Buckhurst Hill and Loughton turn off) is closed from 05.00 to 18.30.

    The High Road, (north of the Epping New Road turn off) is closed from 05.00 to 12.00.

    From Chigwell, Palmerston Road and Roding Lane are closed from 07.30 to 18.00.

    Heading South from Buckhurst Hill, the High Road and Woodford Green are both closed from 07.30 to 18.00.

    The Holly Hospital

    Special access is available, via a controlled gate on the A121 Ongar Road at the Russel Road/Church Road junction.

  • There will be delays on Friday 24 May as the first stage of the Ford RideLondon Classique enters the county. The early moments of the race will pass through Great Chishill, in the South Cambridgeshire district, before continuing west into Hertfordshire.   • There will be minor delays on Friday 24 May as the first stage of the Ford RideLondon Classique will begin in the medieval market town of Saffron Walden, in north-west Essex, and finish in the historic city of Colchester. The full route of Stage One can be viewed here and timings are here.

    Resident access

    The Event will be halted on the Ongar Road (B184) at Dunmow, near the A120 bridge, to the Braintree Road Junction with the B1256, for 10 mins, at 09.00, 10.00, 11.00 and 12.00 to allow resident access to the Chelmsford Road south, and the B1256 bypass. 

    From the A120 junction west, the B1256 is open all day. 

    From Barnston, the Chelmsford Road (A1256) is open all day to the Dunmow Road roundabout. 

    Road closures

    From High Roding, the B184 Dunmow Road, is closed from 06.00 to 14.30. 

    From Blake End, the B1256 is closed from 06.00 to 15.00. 

    The High Road in Great Dunmow is closed for a community festival from 06.00 to 17.00.

    Vehicle crossing points for resident access 

    There are two on the Epping Road, in Epping for residents access across the High Street, to and from Epping Upland and Fiddlers Hamlet. These are Station Road/St John’s Street and Stonards Hill/Lindsey Street.

    Road closures

    From Golding Hill (Miller and Carter Roundabout), the Epping Road is closed from 05.00 to 12.30.  

    From Thornwood Common, the B1393 is closed from 05.00 to 13.00. 

    From North Weald, the B181 is closed from 05.00 to 13.00. 

    St Margaret's Hospital 

    Special access from the north via a controlled gate at Thornwood Common on the B1393.

    From North End, Mill Road to the junction of Station Road is open all day. 

    Vehicle crossing point for resident access

    There is a one in Felsted, allowing resident access from Station Road to Stebbing Road. 

    Road closures

    From Gransmore Green and Bannister Green, The Braintree Road (B1417) is closed from 06.00 to 15.30. 

    From Hartford End, the B1417 is closed from 06.00 to 15.30.

    There is one connecting Moreton Road and Willingale Road all day.  

    Road closures

    From Ongar (Four Wantz Roundabout) the B184 is closed from 05.00 to 13.30 

    From Abbess and Beauchamp Roding the Dunmow Road (B184) is closed from 05.00 to 13.30. 

     
  • There will be delays on Friday 24 May as the first stage of the Ford RideLondon Classique enters the county. The early moments of the race will pass through towns and villages in North Hertfordshire and East Hertfordshire, including Barley, Barkway, Buckland, before heading down the A10, exiting before Buntingford, and continuing onto Hare Street, Great Hormead, Brent Pelham and Pelham Gate before crossing the eastern border back into Essex.     From Margaret Roding, the Chelmsford Road (A1060) is open all day, to Writtle. 

    From Clatterford End, the High Easter Road is open all day to the A1060 roundabout. 

    Vehicle crossing point for resident access 

    There is one East/West resident access at the Axe and Compasses/School Lane junction on the Dunmow Road. 

    Road closures

    From Fyfield and White Roding, the B184 Dunmow Road, and the A1060 (from the Dunmow Road junction) are closed from 07.35 to 13.00. 

    From High Roding, the Dunmow Road is closed from 06.00 to 14.30. 
  • There will be delays on Saturday 25 May as the second stage of the Ford RideLondon Classique will begin and end in the historic market town of Maldon, situated on the Blackwater Estuary on Essex’s east coast. The full route of Stage Two can be viewed here and timings are here.

    From Epping and Thornwood Common the Epping Road (B181) is closed from 05.00 to 13.00. 

    From Ongar the Epping Road from Tylers Green roundabout and the A414 are closed is from 05.00 to 13.00.

    Resident access

    The event will be halted from North Weald and from Writtle at 10.00 for 10 minutes to allow residents to arrive or depart via the Moreton Road to the north, and the Greensted Road and/or Stondon Road to the south. 

    The event will be halted at 14.00 for 15 minutes to allow residents to arrive or depart, north along the open roads, or south along the Greensted Road and Stondon Road. 

    Road closures

    From North Weald, The Epping Road (A414) is closed from 05.00 to 13.00. 

    From Fyfield, The Fyfield Road (B184), is closed from 05.00 to 13.30. 

    From Writtle, The Ongar Road, (A414) is closed from 05.00 to 17.00. 

    From Marden Ash, the Ongar High Street is closed from 07.30 to 17.00.

    Vehicle crossing points for resident access 

    These can be found at: Mashbury Road/Copperfield Road in Melbourne and East View in Writtle.

    Road closures 

    From Fanners Green, Woodall Hill and Chignon Road are closed from 06.00 to 15.30. 

    From Chelmsford, the Rainsford Road/Roxwell Road (A1060) is closed at the Chignal Road junction from 07.00 to 15.30. 

    From Roxwell, the Roxwell Road (A1060) is closed at the Lordship Road junction from 07.00 to 15.30. 

    From Chelmsford, The Greenbury Way (A414) is closed at the Highwood Road roundabout from 05.00 to 17.00. 

    From Ongar, the Ongar Road (A414) is closed at the Highwood Road roundabout, from 08.00 to 17.00.

  • Provision is in place for care providers to make home visits as planned, and all local hospitals will be accessible throughout the event. If you have any queries or need assistance to plan care or hospital visits, please contact our dedicated Customer Services Team here.

  • Ford RideLondon is the world’s greatest cycling festival. It takes place over three days in London and Essex  and features a series of rides and events, designed to offer something for everyone regardless of age, ability or background. It has raised more than £85 million for charity since the first edition of the event in 2013.

  • If you live on or near the Essex section of the route of the Ford RideLondon-Essex 100, a road closure leaflet which included maps and road closure timings was sent via post to you during week commencing Monday 18 March. If you live in the London areas of the route, you will receive your road closure leaflet in April. Similarly, if you live on or near the routes of Stage One and Stage Two of the Ford RideLondon Classique on Friday 24 May or Saturday 25 May, a road closure leaflet will be sent to you in April.

  • While road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of everyone taking part in the event, no area will have road closures on more than one day. The exact length of road closures depends on which event is taking place.

    For the Ford RideLondon Classique professional women’s race, temporary road closures will be in place along the route (except the start and finish venues). This means the road is shut shortly before the first riders come through and then reopens after the last riders and support vehicles have passed. This period of closure usually lasts around 30 minutes.

    For the start and finish venues, where it is necessary to build infrastructure, such as the start and finish gantries and infrastructure for the live TV broadcast, it is necessary for us to close the roads for a longer period of time.

    For the Ford RideLondon-Essex challenge rides, we do put in place full road closures, again to ensure the safety of the participants taking part. The length of these road closures depends on the route location, we reopen the roads when it is safe to do so and as soon possible after the last rider has passed.

  • We work with communities to ensure that essential access is possible. For example to access a carer/hospital/home or for a wedding/special event etc. We take great care that healthcare, emergency services, businesses or any specific special needs are catered for.
